FLIGHT 1

2005 Travaglini Gattinara – Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara Dried flowers and crushed rock on the nose, framed by roasted herbs and tobacco. The fruit comes on towards the end with some nice sour cherry notes. Much the same flavors on the palate as are on the nose. The main difference being that the transition between flavors is not as sharp as it is on the nose. (90 Points)

2005 Falesco Marciliano Umbria IGT – Italy, Umbria, Umbria IGT Sweet dark fruit and toasted oak on the nose, with hints of black licorice and spice. Big, rich and juicy on the palate. It has just a little too much oak for my taste, but the dark fruit and licorice flavors save it. (90 Points)

2007 Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale Tradizionale – Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico Cherry and raspberry on the nose, with background notes of cigar leaf and pepper. This transitions to some floral notes. The tannins are extremely firm on the palate, which hides some of the flavors. There is some berry and raspberry fruit, a little spice, and some tobacco and flowers on the finish. (87 Points)

2003 Casanuova delle Cerbaie Brunello di Montalcino – Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino Cedar and smoke on the nose, with some cherry and leather. Lots of oak and more earthy than fruity. The palate is fat with oak, which overpowers the fruit and earth flavors. (86 Points)

2001 Castello delle Regine Princeps Umbria IGT – Italy, Umbria, Umbria IGT Dark fruit on the nose, plus hints of leather and spice. The oak really shows here, hiding almost anything else. The palate is all oak and tannins. A little dark fruit, and a little spice, but not much else. (85 Points)

FLIGHT 2

2007 Luce Luce della Vite Toscana IGT – Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT Cherry and raspberry on the nose, plus pepper and some floral notes. Soft on the palate, with ripe tannins and sweet red fruit. The mid-palate adds some floral notes and it has a spicy finish. (92 Points)

2006 Andrea Oberto Barolo – Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo A pleasant mix of cherry, spice, and cedar on the nose. Round and fleshy on the palate, with cherry and spice, and a nice cedar finish. (91 Points)
