FLIGHT 1

2005 Telmo Rodríguez Ribera del Duero M2 de Matallana – Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero Lots of smoke-type aromas on the nose – charcoal, roasted coffee beans, and grilled meat. There’s also some blackberry and raspberry, and a little spice. Even more smoky on the palate than it is on the nose. The dark fruit is also more intense. (92 Points)

2009 Bodegas Volver La Mancha Single Vineyard – Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, La Mancha Rich, salty, and stony on the nose, with deep dark black fruit surrounded by floral notes. For all it richness, there is nice balance on the palate. The flavors are the same as the nose, and the finish is really long. (90 Points)

2009 Telmo Rodríguez Toro Dehesa Gago – Spain, Castilla y León, Toro Blackberry and blueberry on the nose, with smoky earth underneath. There are some floral notes in the middle, and some spice at the end. Soft on the palate, with lots of juicy acidity. The dark black fruit comes on in the mid-palate, and the finish is floral and spicy. (90 Points)

2008 Pasanau Priorat Ceps Nous – Spain, Catalunya, Priorat Loads of cedar and spicy on the nose, with dark ripe fruit behind. More fruit forward on the palate. Here the spicy and cedar are in the background. (89 Points)

2006 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, Rioja Scorched earth and minerals on the nose, with floral notes behind that are framed by blackberry and cherry. The palate is very smooth, with decent acidity. There is more fruit upfront, with the earth flavors coming on in the middle. (88 Points)

FLIGHT 2

2004 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado Enea – Spain, La Rioja, Rioja Crushed rock on the nose, with hints of blackberry and raspberry, some smoky meat, and a hint of floral notes. Rich with lots of minerals on the palate. The smoky background is nice, and the dark fruit and floral notes on the finish round it all out. (91 Points)

2004 Fernando Remírez de Ganuza Rioja Gran Reserva – Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Perfumed and earthy on the nose, with dark fruit and salt rock underneath. The palate is similar to the nose, but more restrained, and with lots of tannins. (87 Points)
